Ornans and the Musée Courbet

Ornans and the Musée Courbet

Ornans, the little Venice of the Comtoise, invites you to discover its houses on the Loue, its old private mansions, its bridges and its fountains... Nature is also honoured here... Mountains, cliffs, rivers, waterfalls, caves... An extensive heritage to discover throughout the seasons. It is not surprising that Gustave Courbet, a great 19th century painter and master of the realistic current, born in Ornans and very attached to this land, painted the landscapes of the Valleys of the Loue and Lison all his life.

A magnificent museum is dedicated to him. Located 500 meters from our establishment, it is the essential visit. Discover or rediscover the sulphurous history of this great painter and his works, from the most famous to the most confidential.

The Source of the Loue

The Source of the Loue

The source spring of the Loue towards Ouhans is located at the bottom of a valley dominated by impressive cliffs that inspired Courbet many times over. As for that at Lison, clinging to the village of Nans under Sainte Anne, it springs into a very green basin before falling in a cascade into a basin that feeds the river. The show is fascinating after a heavy rainy period.

Architectural Heritage

Architectural Heritage

History lovers, the Doubs offers you an exceptional architectural heritage with two sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Between fortified military architecture and a utopian city dedicated to the exploitation of salt, these two sites are excessive. To its majesty, the Citadelle Vauban de Besançon, perched above the capital of the county and defying the invader with all its mass, responds the Royal Salt Works of Arc-et-Senans, an old salt factory designed and built by the utopian Claude-Nicolas Ledoux between 1775 and 1779. A remarkable distribution of 11 monumental buildings harmoniously located in a half-moon, the precursor of an ideal city. Two emblematic and essential places that house many museums, offer their decor to multiple artistic and cultural activities throughout the year, and, in summer, day and night ...
